The historical town of Assisi is relatively small and compact, and so therefore many tourists find that the best way to travel around is simply on foot. This may be slower than using bus transport, but it is a wonderful way to explore Assisi at your leisure. However, be warned - many of the streets are steep inclines and you may well need to stop off along the way and enjoy some Italian ice cream!

If you are intending to travel outside of Assisi, then bus and rail transport present themselves, with each having something different to offer. Many locals favour the trains, which tend to be very reliable and quite inexpensive, while for tourists, bus transport is often the preferred mode, being more central and therefore more convenient.

The nearest international airport to Assisi, San Egidio Airport is a mere 15 km / 9 miles to the west of Assisi, on the outskirts of nearby Perugia. San Egidio serves a limited number of international destinations and these include London (Stansted), along with a number of domestic Italian cities, such as Milan, Olbia and Palermo. Most people at San Egidio Airport choose to travel into Assisi using inexpensive bus transport or taxis, and traffic permitting, the town can be reached in around 20 minutes.

If you are travelling from Perugia to Assisi, you will need to take the SS75 autostrada and then exit at the Ospedalicchio junction. From here, the town will be well signposted.

When you arrive, you will find a total of six separate car parks sited just outside of the town's historic walls, being linked to the town centre by bright-orange shuttle bus transport. Alternatively, those prepared for a steep walk will find free car parking around the Via della Rocca.

Assisi Travel and Transport: Travel by Bus and Coach - Assisi, Italy, IT
Bus transport from Assisi travels to and from Perugia around eight times every day, with a journey time of just 50 minutes. Regular buses also travel to destinations such as Gubbio (just over one hour), running from the town's intercity bus station, on the Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia. Sulga buses also run to both Florence and Rome. Shuttle buses run every 30 minutes between the Piazza Matteotti and the railway station.

Although the railway station in Assisi is located around 4 km / 2.5 miles to the west of the centre, it does tend to be a much better transport option than public buses. This is because trains from the town travel more frequently and quickly, and the train tickets are actually cheaper than buses, providing better value. Shuttle bus transport links Assisi's railway station with the APM bus station, which is located on the Piazza Matteotti. The Foligno-Terontola line features regular hourly services to Perugia (30 minutes), and those wishing to travel to Florence (almost three hours) and Rome (two and a half hours) will need to change at Terontola.
