Assisi is always a good choice for those looking to do some serious shopping and a large number of the town's stores remain open at the time of the siesta. This means that tourists to Assisi have the added advantage to shop when it is most convenient to them and don't need to be overly concerned with shops closing for several hours during the heat of the afternoon.

As you begin to approach the Basilica di San Francesco, the shopping vibe begins to change quite noticeably and more and more tacky gift shops selling Italian souvenirs start to crop up. However, if you are looking for something a little more reserved and traditional to remind you of your stay in Assisi, then simply wander down some of the side streets. Shops here regularly sell quality leather goods, a variety of pottery, embroidered fabrics and lace, woven 'Perugia towels', olive oil, and plenty of clothing.

Shopping in Assisi should always be approached in a leisurely way, and with so many cafes dotted around the town, it is almost obligatory to stop off en route and enjoy a coffee, a glass of wine, or even peach-flavoured ice tea (tè freddo alla pesca).

Outdoor markets in Assisi are always a fun place to explore and provide a good alternative to more mainstream shopping. On Saturdays, markets are always held on the Piazza Matteotti, followed on Mondays by a further market on the Santa Maria degli Angeli.
