Assisi Art Galleries: Central imageThe various art galleries of Assisi are often ecclesiastical in their nature and display some rather old and impressive religious art works. Assisi's Municipal Art Gallery is one such gallery and is known both for its dramatic frescoes and paintings by famous Italian artists.

Also of note, the town's beautiful Basilica di San Francesco boasts a series of wonderful frescoes, while the Museo Capitolare boasts innumerable religious art works. Often known as simply the Assisi Treasury, the Museo del Tesoro e Collezioni FM Perkins can be found within the Basilica di San Francesco and next to the apse of the Lower Church.

Located in the heart of Old Town Assisi and next to the Piazza del Comune, the Municipal Art Gallery is located inside the Palazzo Vallemani and contains an array of spectacular frescoes and historic paintings, which date back as far as the 14th century. Notable artists include both Giotto di Bondone and Puccio Capanna, with the frescoes often featuring a definite Byzantine and Umbrian influence.

The Museo Capitolare is located within the south nave of the Duomo and may be small, but is packed with historical art works of a religious nature. Particularly impressive is a large painting by famous Italian artist Niccolò Alunno (1430 - 1502), of the Umbrian school. The crypt is close by and very atmospheric.

Home to an especially rich collection of paintings and detailed wooden sculptures, highlights include pieces by Masolino da Panicale (1383 - 1447) and also Pietro Lorenzetti (1280 - 1348), amongst other artists from all over Italy, including Florence, Siena, Venice and Verona. Also of interest are a series of beautifully preserved tapestries, majolica pottery and Arabian silks.
