There are some very interesting and enjoyable attractions around Assisi and many of these are based in the region of the centrally located Piazza del Comune and the Piazzetta Garibaldi. The Rocca Maggiore (Large Fort) is the grandest of the town's two hilltop medieval attractions and this acclaimed tourist attraction dominates the Via della Rocca, standing next to the Rocca Minore (Small Fort).

Offering something different and close to the town of Assisi, the Park of Mount Subasio is part of the Apennine Mountains and reaches heights of around 1,300 metres / 4,265 feet above sea level. Further tourist attractions of note in Assisi include the Park of Colfiorito, and also the 13th-century Portico del Monte Frumentario building, which has become well known for its arches and architecture.

Forming the very heart of this charming town, the Piazza del Comune is home to a number of notable medieval and turreted attractions, such as the 14th-century Palace of the Deputies. This square is well preserved and surrounded by history, with a magnificent central fountain. The Piazza del Comune is also home to Assisi's main tourist office and was actually built on the site of the ancient Roman Forum. Many fascinating archaeological remains lie beneath the piazza and can be accessed via the Museo Civico, off the Via Portica.

La Rocca Minore literally translates as the 'Small Fort' and this popular attraction once served the town in a very important military capacity. Situated right next to the Rocca Maggiore (Large Fort), the slightly more historic Rocca Minore dates from the middle of the 14th century. Today, this fortress remains in a state of disrepair and so can only be viewed from the outside.

Built towards the end of the 1360s for defensive purposes, the Rocca Maggiore boasts spectacular views across the valley and on a clear day it is possible to see as far as Perugia. Apart from the views, other attractions include some rather imposing towers and ramparts, various military artefacts and a series of recently restored rooms. As you approach Assisi, it is quite likely that the Rocca Maggiore will be one of the first sights that you are welcomed with and is a good indication of what the town has to offer.

Tourists come to the Parco del Monte Subasio for the wildlife trails and related attractions, which are especially rich around the park and include birds of prey such as buzzards, goshawks and horny owls. However, others just enjoy the beautiful scenery and vistas of the surrounding countryside. If you are feeling energetic, it is possible to hike to the very summit of Monte Subasio, or alternatively, you may prefer to go by horse.

Assisi Tourist Attractions: Park of Colfiorito / Palude di Colfiorito - Assisi, Italy, IT
The Park of Colfiorito covers a vast area and this network of tablelands feature a total of seven different valleys, of which the Palude di Colfiorito is by far the most significant. Once the site of a number of ancient lake basins, the Park of Colfiorito has become an important nature reserve, being home to everything from eagle owls to wild cats. The park also boasts some ancient Roman attractions and ruins, pre-dating the 10th century.

Assisi Tourist Attractions: Portico del Monte Frumentario - Via San Francesco, Assisi, Italy, IT
Completed in the latter part of the 13th century, the Portico del Monte Frumentario is in close proximity to a number of the town's leading attractions and landmarks, such as the Basilica di San Francesco, Piazza del Comune and the 16th-century Fonte Olivera fountain. Initially used as a hospital, the Portico del Monte Frumentario features a total of seven large stone arches.
